MARSOFT’S JUNE 2022 eBRIEFS now available

The June eBriefs examine the impact and key developments affecting the dry bulk and tanker markets arising from the impact of the continuing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

With the Russia-Ukraine War entering its fifth month, we are starting to get a better understanding of how the war is impacting both the tanker and dry bulk shipping markets. Our newly available eBriefs discuss the key recent developments and what we expect to happen going forward.

On the tanker side, total Russian oil exports have fallen more slowly than we expected, but a significant shift in trading patterns has nevertheless had a big impact on the market. In general, smaller ships have benefitted from this shift more than larger ships, with product tankers seeing the most dramatic gains in response to changes wrought by the war and sanctions.

As for the dry bulk market, we expected a negative impact on the grain trade, and indeed these supplies have been sharply reduced, but the impact on the market has been muted so far. However, we are now seeing clear signs that European coal imports will be ramped up in response to cutbacks in Russian gas supplies.
